Our Ethos - Part II: ARTISAN DISTILLED

For almost the entire history of human evolution, we lived as part of nature. Wild plants were sources of nutrition, healing, perfume and beauty. And even after cultivation began to dominate, we continued to draw on the natural world.
Today however, we have become separated from nature.
Food, medicine, fragrance, music, and more –
are mainly products of industry and technology.
Yet something still stirs inside us when we
taste an organic strawberry,
destress with lavender,
delight in the scent of a wildflower,
or listen to birdsong.
We awaken a dormant bond with the natural world.
Part I of this series - Farmed Naturally, outlined our practices for growing healthy, vital plants – in a natural, bio-diverse landscape.
The second part of our Ethos - Artisan Distilled, is our philosophy of processing with methods that preserve the innate beauty and wellness properties of plants.
Distill means to extract, condense, and purify. In a very real sense, plants distill nature. They transform sun, wind, rain and earth into visual beauty, fragrance, nutrition and healing.
We feel a responsibility to follow the way of the plants. So, we employ old-world methods such as alembic distilling – using the elements of fire, water and air to produce potent botanicals for everyday wellness.
At Lavender & Black, we’ve earned the right to say we are “farm-to-bottle”. We grow, harvest, process, and craft in small batches – all from our Salt Spring Island farm.
